Our Story
A Scottish family's journey to Bulgaria
Hi! We're a Scottish family originally from Edinburgh, and for the past 7+ years we've been lucky enough to call Bulgaria home.
We live in a small Bulgarian village in the Lovech Region, in a beautiful house with a large garden where we grow our own organic fruit and vegetables—and yes, we keep chickens too! Gardening isn't just a hobby for us, it's a way of life, and we genuinely love every minute of it.
We were fortunate to move here pre-Brexit, which made our integration a little easier than it is today. Before Bulgaria, my wife and I were both chefs, regularly working 90-hour weeks and slowly burning ourselves out. We knew something had to change—and soon.
That spark came after watching Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild. We were hooked and thought, why not us? After researching European countries with affordable property and a lower cost of living, Bulgaria kept coming out on top. So we booked a holiday to see it for ourselves—and instantly fell in love.
With the help of a local agent, we viewed several properties until we found our forever home. Living in a Bulgarian village has encouraged us to integrate fully, learn the traditions, and embrace the culture. As former chefs, we've especially enjoyed discovering Bulgarian cuisine—and even making videos of traditional recipes along the way.
Seven years on, we're still just as passionate about life here. We have absolutely no regrets about moving to this beautiful country, and we love sharing our experiences with others who dream of a simpler, more meaningful life.
